Matt Salmon is the most literal example of a hands-on CEO possible, beginning his career at SALMON Health and Retirement 20 years ago as a staff physical therapist before working his way up the ladder.

It’s a skill he never set aside.

“I tell people, ‘I’m the CEO, but that doesn’t absolve me of walking into someone’s room and answering the call light,'” said Matt. “It’s woven into the fabric of how we do things here.”

Along with siblings Kate and Andrew, Matt is the third-generation of the Salmon family that founded the organization, but as a young man he hoped to practice physical therapy in the pro-athlete world. After graduating from college, he and his wife Kim traveled the country as physical therapists, working a few weeks at a time at various places for staff who were on leave.

After two years, he interviewed for a physical therapy position at SALMON Health and Retirement’s location in Westborough. He worked his way up to the rehabilitation director position at the Natick campus before becoming the executive director of the Northbridge campus and returning to school to earn Master of Health Care Professions and Master of Business Administration degrees.

He then began to focus on administrative roles, becoming Vice President of Programs, Quality and Innovation in 2006, Chief Operating Officer in 2010, and Chief Executive Officer in 2013.

Matt stated SALMON Health and Retirement has strategically expanded its services and locations since it was founded over sixty years ago. It now offers independent retirement communities, assisted living residences, skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, VNA and hospice services, adult day health care and early education centers in Natick, Northborough, Northbridge, Westborough and Worcester. “We’re unique in that we can support a senior through any period of their lives,” said Salmon.

Throughout all this growth, the organization has been able to hold onto its exemplary reputation and family business approach. His wife Kim Malloy-Salmon is Director of Rehabilitation Services, his sister Kate Salmon-Robinson is Director of Marketing Communications and Community Relations, his brother Andrew Salmon is the Director of Network Development, and his uncle Mike Salmon is the Director of Operations for Dining Services.

“I’m still a physical therapist, and they are still my family,” said Matt. “We have a hands-on background, and it frames the attitude about the job we do.”
